Godly Expectations

Psalm 62:5 "My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him."

Every one of us lives with expectations. We expect certain things to happen, certain prayers to be answered, and certain dreams to come to pass. We picture how life "should" unfold, and when it doesn't, disappointment often follows. Perhaps you expected to be further along by now. Maybe you thought your marriage would be easier, your finances stronger, your health restored, your children serving God, or your prayers answered already. Maybe you believed that after surrendering your life to Christ, life would become simpler, only to discover new battles you never anticipated.

The truth is, disappointment often grows in the gap between what we expected and what actually happened. The psalmist gives us a better place to anchor our hearts: "My expectation is from Him." God never promised that life would always happen according to our schedule, but He did promise that He would never leave us, never forsake us, and that He would work all things together for the good of those who love Him. Elijah understood this. God had promised rain after years of drought. Yet when Elijah sent his servant to look toward the sea, there was nothing, six different times. Imagine if Elijah had allowed what he saw to determine what he believed. Instead, his expectation remained fixed on God's promise, not on present circumstances. Then, on the seventh trip, the servant returned with a report: "There is a cloud, as small as a man's hand." Elijah knew then that God was already moving. Faith is not ignoring reality; faith is believing God's promise even when reality has not caught up yet. Our greatest disappointments often come when we expect people to do what only God can do. People will forget. People will fail. Circumstances will change. Dreams may take longer than we hoped. But God remains faithful. Healthy relationships require grace because people are imperfect. A healthy spiritual life requires trust because God is perfect. Today, ask yourself this important question: Where have I placed my expectations? If your peace depends on people behaving a certain way, circumstances changing quickly, or life unfolding according to your plan, disappointment will eventually steal your joy. But if your expectation rests in God, you can wait with confidence because His timing is always perfect, His promises never fail, and His plans are always greater than your own.
